About
My Books

I received my BFA from New York University, my Masters from Northwestern University, and my doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh.  As a theatre student, I was lucky enough to have studied acting with Stella Adler at her studio, directing with Jack Garfein, a protege of Harold Clurman at his Actor's and Director's Lab on Theatre Ros in New York and conducting/orchestration with the great Broadway conductors Lehman Engel and Stanley Lebowski.  My theatrical career has included Broadway, off-Broadway and national/international tours.  Regional theatres where I have worked include: The Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Pittsburgh Public Theatre, Long Wharf Theatre, Syracuse Stage, among many.

When I realized that I had lived enough of a theatrical life to be able to pass along to the next generation, I began a successful career as a university professor.  Having previously taught at HB Studio, NYU,  Point Park University and the University of Pittsburgh, I accepted a tenure track faculty position at Northwester State University of Louisiana (NSULA), which was followed by a position at Syracuse University.  I am currently a tenured Associate Professor at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ.

My academic career led to yet a third career as an author.  I currently have two textbooks and a coffee table book in print, with two additional books currently being written. I have also presented papers and national and international conferences, many of which have been published in peer-reviewed academic journals.  The pleasure I found writing academic papers has led to a new career of writing articles, features and columns for a wide range of publications, both printed and electronic.

My Story

Press
Education
Educator

Being an educator has always been part of my DNA.  I began as an accompanist at HB Studio and in short order began substituting for the teachers whose classes I was accompanying, Robert Elston and Marthe Schlamme.  I was hired to teach  musical theatre acting classes at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts as an adjunct while I was still an undergraudate there.

Throughout my three careers I have continued to work privately with students on both musical and dramatic material, whether young performers or seasoned - technique enhancement or work on specific texts.

I was fortunate enough to have worked with so many wonderful teachers who passed their accumulated wisdom down to me to pass on in turn.  This includes  having accompanied the great Paul Gavert (teacher of Barbara Cook, Len Cariou and pretty much everyone else) in his master classes and lessons.

In addition to the master classes, which I have held around the world, I have taught full-term classes and have been on faculty at the following insitution:

  • New Jersey Institute of Technology

  • Point Park University

  • The University of Pittsburgh

  • Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSULA)

  • Syracuse University

  • Rider University
